Production
Since 1974 Mike Owen has been involved in a range of production including many award winning programmes, which include:
- "Birthday", which tracked the history of a baby from conception to birth; the programme was nominated for a Japan prize.
- "From Cradle to Grave", the innovative first-ever programme on commercial radio to explore sexuality from birth to death.
- "Sounds Like Birmingham", featuring the work of Birmingham in its year as "City of Music"; this was nominated for a Priz Italia by the Independent Broadcasting Authority as best UK Arts Programme of the Year and won a BP Arts Journalism Award;
- "Fit for Life", a series on healthy eating, which led to Mike being nominated at the "Glenfiddich Food Awards", the primary UK foodie award;
- A Sony "Station of the Year" Award, won in 1989 by Mike as Programme Controller of BRMB for the quality of the station's output, which was described by judge Austin Mitchell MP as "An inspirational example of how local radio can reach its audience with great quality and real entertainment".
- "Electric Youth", which saw Mike win the "Best Youth Programme" Award at the Sony Radio Awards 1990;
- The Elvis documentaries produced for national distribution and recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, the first of which was produced for the 25th anniversary of the death of Elvis in 2002 and a subsequent feature which was produced in 2007 for the 30th anniversary and was broadcast on all the major UK commercial radio networks.
- The "Longbridge" radio series, produced and broadcast on The Villan, Sky Digital 903 and subsequently 1152 AM Capital Gold Birmingham, which provided advice and support for the MG Rover workers who had lost their jobs after the closure of the plant. The series was supported and funded by the Learning and Skills Council.
