Radio Stations

BRMB is the commercial radio station for Birmingham and the surrounding areas. It began broadcasting in 1974 and was the fourth "Independent Local Radio" station to commence transmissions. It is currently owned by Global Radio. Mike Owen's association with BRMB dates back to 1978 when he was appointed as producer of the Ed Doolan show.

Aston FM is one of the UK's newly licensed community radio stations. It began broadcasting in 2007 and is based at Aston Villa FC. Mike Owen Media has delivered a number of radio training programmes in partnership with Aston FM.

 

Radio Industry Organisations

The Radio Academy is a registered charity which acts as a professional body for the UK radio industry and is dedicated to promoting excellence in UK broadcasting. Mike Owen Media handled the media relations for the Radio Academy's flagship event, the Radio Festival, from 1997 to 2005 and Mike Owen is the current Chairman of the Midlands branch.

Skillset is the Sector Skills Council for the Creative Industries of the UK.  Its work is to make sure that the creative industries remain competitive by ensuring that their workforces develop and attain the right skills. Mike Owen Media continues to work closely with Skillset's radio division in respect of the development of national radio training initiatives.

 

Funding Organisations

The Learning and Skills Council is responsible for planning and funding further education in England and Wales.  It was established in 2001. Mike Owen Media has completed a number of LSC contracts in the field of radio training and has extensive experience of the systems and practices employed by the organisation.

The European Social Fund is one of four main structural funds operated by the European Union.  It became operational in 1960.  Its chief purpose is to increase employment in member countries via the funding of vocational training. Mike Owen Media's training activity through the LSC is part-funded by ESF under its 2000-2006 programme.

 

Awarding Bodies & Education Organisations

NCFE is based in Newcastle and can trace its history back to 1848 with the Northern Union of Mechanics' Institutes. Mike Owen Media is accredited with NCFE to deliver radio production courses at Level 1 and Level 2.

OCR (Oxford, Cambridge, & RSA Examinations) is based in Cambridge and was created in 1997 following a merger of two prior awarding bodies. Mike Owen Media is accredited with OCR to deliver its National Certificate in Media at Level 2.
